Honoring Mother’s Day: A Tribute to Motherless Moms

Mother’s Day can be a bittersweet time for those of us who have lost our mothers. For some, like myself, the absence of a maternal figure is felt deeply, having lost both my grandmother who raised me, and my own mother who passed away at the young age of 50. As we approach this special day, it’s important to recognize and honor the unique journey of motherless moms, and how finding solace and purpose through creative outlets, like running a handmade business, can provide a path to healing and inspiration.

Growing up without a mother figure can shape one's life in profound ways. For me, it was my grandmother who filled that role with unwavering love and guidance. Losing her at 20 years old was like losing a piece of myself, and then losing my mom when I was 33, was another devastating blow. The pain of their absence on Mother’s Day is a constant reminder of what I’ve lost, but it's also an opportunity to celebrate the impact they had on my life. But, when I became a mom, I recognized that I needed to be the same foundation and a soft place for my son.

In the midst of grief, I found solace in creativity. Starting a handmade business became not only a way to cope but also a tribute to the strong women who shaped me. Through my creations, I honor their memory and carry on their legacy of strength and resilience. This process also makes me a better mom.

Running a handmade business is more than just a means of income; it’s a form of therapy and self-expression. Pouring myself into my craft allows me to channel my emotions into something tangible and beautiful. Each piece I create is infused with love, reminiscent of the love I received from my grandmother and mother. I also need to be mentally well for my son. I want him to see the best of me and my business allows me to show him how mommy perseveres and works hard to give him the best life possible.

Moreover, my handmade business serves as a source of inspiration for other women, especially those who may be going through similar struggles. In sharing my story and my creations, I hope to empower others to find healing through creativity and to embrace the beauty that can come from pain.

Mother’s Day may always be tinged with sadness for motherless moms, but it's also a day to celebrate the strength, love, and resilience that define us. As we honor the memory of our mothers, grandmothers, and maternal figures, let us find comfort in the knowledge that their legacy lives on through us and the lives we touch with our creativity and compassion.
